Party calls for referendum on proposed "super council"

Poole Labour Party is to make a formal request to Poole Council to give residents the opportunity to have their say on the proposed new “super council” in a Yes/No referendum. The call comes following the result in Christchurch in which 84% of voters said they did not wish to be included in the new local authority structure planned for May 2019.

Katie Taylor, Poole Labour Chair said : “The residents in Poole should have the same rights as those in Christchurch, and that means being given the chance to have a vote on the future of their local council and the services it provides. A simple yes vote in a referendum would give the council the mandate it currently doesn’t have to press ahead with this dramatic change.”

“It’s also time that Robert Syms, like his counterpart in Christchurch comes out and supports the right of people to have the final say on the future of their schools, care services, housing and public amenities. We are urging the council and our MP to put the decision into the hands of local residents, not the ruling Conservative members of Poole Council who have been elected to represent the wishes of local people yet have so far failed to ask them about this crucial issue."
